Is Global Warming Speeding Up?
Thanks to climate change, 2023 has shattered heat records, and 2024 is continuing where last year left off. With this devastating heat driving extreme weather - from heatwaves to downpours to wildfires - across the globe, scientists are increasingly asking if global warming could be accelerating. So what does the evidence show? Is the heating up of our planet speeding up? If so, what does this climate change mean for our future? And can we still hit the brakes and halt global warming?

See what three degrees of global warming looks like
If global temperatures rise three degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the results would be catastrophic. It’s an entirely plausible scenario, and this film shows you what it would look like.

Global Warming from 1880 to 2022
Earth's average surface temperature in 2022 tied with 2015 as the fifth warmest on record, according to an analysis by NASA. Continuing the planet's long-term warming trend, global temperatures in 2022 were 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.89 degrees Celsius) above the average for NASA's baseline period (1951-1980), scientists from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York reported.

Climate change - Averting catastrophe | DW Documentary
In the last 30 years, CO2 emissions have increased by 60 percent worldwide. The most pressing problem facing our civilization is global warming. What solutions could there be? This documentary accompanies activists in their efforts to combat climate change.
According to scientists, if by the year 2100 the global temperature has risen more than 1.5 degrees Celsius on levels recorded in the year 1850, the consequences could be devastating for people and the environment. But will we manage to achieve this ambitious goal? Around the world, politicians, companies, laboratories and universities are struggling to find solutions.

Global Warming.
The thicker layer of greenhouse gases traps more heat.
This result in an increase in average temperature of the earth and the earth becomes hotter and hotter.
This is called global warming.
If we do not take steps to reduce global warming, it will lead to loss of human lives, plants and animals.
Steps to reduce global warming:
Plant more trees. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Use less hot water. Turn off electronic devices when not in use. Spread awareness.
Come on everybody, let us reduce global warming.

Global Tipping Points
Things are really bad. Devastating climate events and nature loss are here today. Scientists are no longer talking about tomorrow’s problems. This is with average warming of 1.2 degrees Celsius. Under current policies we are on a trajectory of warming 2 degrees C, which will have an impact exponentially greater than we face today. But it is worse than this. As warming approaches and surpasses 2 degrees C this may cause critical Earth system tipping points, once considered low-likelihood, to rapidly become much higher-likelihood events. These harmful discontinuities pose some of the gravest threats faced by humanity. The scientific community has warned of runaway climate change for some years, but never before have we had such a comprehensive assessment of the “negative tipping points” (20+...

The film team visits climate rescuers in Sudan, Indonesia and Europe. Their inventive spirit cools buildings, connects countries with green electricity lines or sucks carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Their work helps determine the living conditions of generations to come.
Every time the women of Shagra plant an acacia seedling in the sand of Darfur, it is an occasion of great joy in the Sudanese village. The tree will drive its roots 100 meters into the ground and be better able to withstand the droughts in the Sahel than most other plants. It will secrete gum sap when women scratch the bark after a few years. The sale of gum arabic will alleviate poverty in the village.
65,000 acacias are already growing in Darfur: a blessing for the bitterly poor region, as well as a carbon dioxide reservoir that can help limit global warming.

The scientific community has warned of runaway climate change for some years, but never before have we had such a comprehensive assessment of the “negative tipping points” (20+) that were presented in the Global Tipping Points Reports in 2023. The good news is that it is not too late. The GTP report shows us that, just as there are dangerous negative tipping points, so too there are very significant positive tipping points in our near-term future if only we have the courage and ambition to seize them. Our discussion will revolve around defining and understanding the 25 negative tipping points and the hard work and effort needed to take advantage of the positive tipping points.
The Presenter is Joe Gentry, a member of the ACC Board of Trustees, Executive Director of the Northeast Michigan United Way and a long time ALL Presenter. This program was presented to the Association of Lifelong Learners @ ACC on April 11, 2024, in Alpena, MI.
